excerpt

Damn, she bet no woman had ever told him no in his life.

She’d have to be the first. Folding her arms across her chest, partly to keep him from seeing her erect nipples, she held firm. “I’m sorry. I’m happy to have you both here, but not until the proper documentation is in place.”

He smirked, like he thought she was full of shit. Or was it because he knew her nipples were hard?

Damn, was she blushing?

The youth looked at her with an innocent, easygoing appeal.

Was she really capable of throwing them out?

“I’ll bet you’re pretty confident you can sweet talk your way into anything, aren’t you?”

The corners of his mouth twitched. “Is this about money, because I’m happy to pay for both our memberships. It’s just that we only need it for a few weeks and I thought you were interested in supporting the community—”

“I am interested in supporting the community.” Her voice had gone up a notch. How did she end up being the bitch here? “And no, it’s not about the money. It’s just about having the proper liability forms signed by all the parties.”

Rick stepped closer, rather than drawing away. They probably taught him that in Flirting 101. “I’ll tell you what,” he said, flashing that heart-stopping smile at her. His voice was deep and resonant and seemed to go right into her body, activating every cell. “I’ll fill mine out right now, and I’ll have Donnie’s mom sign his tonight so that next time we are set up properly.”

She put her hands on her hips. “Somehow I don’t think you’re taking this—me,” she spluttered. “As seriously as you should.”

Obviously she was right because his smile only increased. He cocked a brow. “How serious do you want to take this?”

Her tummy fluttered at the innuendo. Her brain stomped its foot. “Rick Morehouse, that flirty act might work with Houston Socialites, but it’s not going to work with me.”

His lips twitched. “I wasn’t flirting. I’m just being friendly.”

Half of her wanted to kick him in the shin, the other half considered jumping the sexy man. It was hard enough to run a business as a female entrepreneur in a good ‘ol boys state without having Coach Handsome throwing her off her game.

A fire burned in his green eyes, lighting her from head to toe. As if he had some mesmerizing power, she realized she really didn’t want to tell him no. Her shoulders dropped in defeat. “Fine.” She really hoped nobody got hurt today or it would be her ass on the line.

His smile widened. He had sensual lips, and she imagined he must be the most expert kisser in all of Texas. He’d probably already done toothpaste commercials. She should find time to watch more TV.

“But I will need that liability waiver from his mom here by tomorrow—and yours right now.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

She wanted to wipe that smirk right off his face. Why didn’t he take her seriously?

She whirled around, her ponytail flipping in their direction as she stalked off. And ran right into the leg press machine.

“Ow.” Damn, her shin. That would be a bruise.

“You okay?”

Shut up, Coach Perfect.

“Fine.” She rubbed it, hopping on one foot and trying to walk away at the same time. “You just worry about yourself over there.”

She heard the deep rumble of laughter following her out of the room.

book blurb

As the bassist for the band Caged, the last three years have been one, long non-stop party. Sure, I’ve had some regrets. Everyone does. But getting trapped in a relationship isn’t one of them. I know good and well what happens when the attraction fades. I’ve seen it first hand. Love is a zero sum game, so why play? As long as I’m upfront about my feelings, no one gets hurt. Besides, I’m never in one place long enough to worry about tomorrow.

That is, until the band decided to take an extended hiatus in our hometown. That’s when I met Melody Sullivan. She’s the full-package. Whip smart and beautiful, with enough determination to take on anything life has in store. And the best part? Melody shares my philosophy on the fleeting nature of attraction. She doesn’t buy into the whole “happily ever after” crap anymore than I do. We’re perfect for each other. For now. And now is all I want.

With the expectations off the table, I can let my guard down and enjoy her company until the spark dies. And we both know it will. In a week, or a month. But until then, we’ll just keep having fun. The good kind, with lots of sex and no strings attached. And when it’s time to move on, we will. No drawn out goodbyes and no remorse.

That’s the plan, at least.

meet the author

I guess I should start with the basics: the backstory. I was born and raised in California. At this point, I’m usually asked what it was like to grow up near the beach, but sadly, I don’t know. I grew up in the “other” part of California. Perfect for an aspiring writer, if you ask me. You learn a lot about keeping yourself busy when the nearest house is a mile away…and it belongs to your grandparents.

I spent all my time with my nose in a book, living vicariously through the characters, until I wrote a book of my own. I was ten at the time. It was a scintillating piece that cast the family pet as the protagonist.

By the time I went to high school, I moved on to romance. Why? Because I met my very own prince charming. I wrote love poems in my journal about the green-eyed boy who stole my heart. He promised, the way all storybook heroes do, to sweep me away and take me on a grand adventure. And he did.

We picked up and moved to the Lone Star State and began the story of us. The best stories begin without a road map or a compass. Veering off course makes the journey so much more interesting.

True to form, just when I thought my life was set, we started the next adventure. I traded in my cowboy boots and followed my green-eyed boy to Las Vegas. My home will always be in Texas, but my heart is anywhere that he is. Our beautiful daughter made the journey with us. Our son stayed in Texas, to write his own story.

Somehow, in the midst of the chaos that is our life, I find time to write. Writing is what I love. I might stray from romance every now and then if that is what moves me…but I always come back. Some of the stories don’t seem romantic at all. They are gritty stories about flawed characters that find each other and hold on tight. Those are the stories that speak to me. Because that’s life. I believe that every story should have a happy ending—even the difficult ones.

book blurb

Some lessons are harder to learn than others…

Doctor O-for-Awesome Owen Bennett is all about fixing broken things. Then the arrival of his orphaned nieces and nephew for twelve weeks causes his workaholic life to plummet into chaos. Hiring the beautiful but unpredictable Gracie Cooper as a live-in nanny might just get him out of a tight spot…or it could seduce him into a reckless affair.

After four years flitting around Europe, waitress/dog-walker/au-pair Gracie Cooper has returned home to New Zealand. Her plans to hang out with her big brother change when Owen offers a perfect solution to her crippling university debt. In spite of her sexy-stick-in-the-mud boss, she’ll spend fun days playing in Bounty Bay’s sand and surf with three cute kids. At summer’s end she’ll follow the sun overseas again.

Gracie and Owen’s opposites-attract connection is so unexpected and powerful that their foundations are rocked. But some things aren’t easy to fix. Some past hurts can’t be run from forever. And the lessons they teach each other risk breaking their hearts.

excerpt

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to wake you,” came his voice from behind the closed drapes.

“I’m awake. I’m awake.”

Parts of her were very awake, so make that three-quarters turned on since a delicious shiver zipped down her spine at the thought of him outside her room. She tugged on her robe, catching a glimpse of herself in the wall mirror.

Ugh.

Resisting the real deal wouldn’t be a problem. Rephrase that—Owen resisting her wouldn’t be a problem. Not sporting frizzy hair like a before photo for a hair-straightening product, her face flushed carnation pink, and a deep pillowcase groove marking her cheek. Dead sexy. Not.

And, oh God—morning breath. Gracie lunged for her handbag and found a packet of mints. She popped one into her mouth and speed-crunched it as she tightened the robe’s belt.

Finally, she yanked the full length drapes open to a bare-footed Owen wearing ancient blue jeans—which, yum, clung to his legs—and a plaid shirt layered over a white tee shirt. His short brown hair stuck up in a dozen different directions, and two days’ worth of stubble covered his jaw. And, yeah, she’d noticed he hadn’t shaved when he’d disappeared off to work yesterday morning.

Gracie slid open the door, and a wave of salt-tinted ocean breeze swept over her. She took a moment to suck a deep lungful down and hoped the fresh air flowing into her room would cool her jets. So to speak. Because even as jaded as Owen looked—and, bless him, it proved he was actually human—she still wanted to grab him by his plaid lapels and kiss the living daylights out of him again.

She tucked her hands under her armpits, just in case, and leaned on the doorframe. “Let me guess…since I’m a former bartender, you’d like me to whip you up a hair of the dog?”

He crinkled his nose. Adorable and hot—so unfair.

“I’m not hungover,” he said.

“My bad. You’re not your usual Barbie Dreamhouse self. Rough night?”

“You could say that.” He scratched his fingernails along his jaw. “But Barbie Dreamhouse?”

“Charlie thinks you look like a Ken doll.”

“Nice. Glad to inform you that I’m not molded from plastic.” His lips curved. “You’re not looking Barbie Dreamhouse yourself this morning. Rough night?”

True, but ouch. “Now that we’ve established I look like Frankenstein’s bride—”

“Never said that. I think you look cute. All rumpled and flushed like you’ve just been”—his gaze dipped to the V-neckline of her robe then jumped up to rest on her mouth—“woken up by some jerk banging on your door.”

Like you’ve just been…banged senseless in the last few minutes. Seriously not helping her control her internal thermostat.

book blurb

Windy City Millionaire Devlin Stone is about to discover that love and revenge don’t mix.

Fifteen years ago my father went to jail for crime he didn’t commit. Now, I’m back to take revenge on the man who sent him there. He believes himself untouchable, and for the most part, he is. His daughter, however, is very touchable and well within my reach.

I remember her as a sweet kid, who took piano lessons from my mother. These days she’s a complicated woman, who has a knack for distracting me from my retribution.

She wants to save me. I intend to ruin her. Things are going to get interesting.

excerpt

“While I’m in town, I need a companion.”

“A what?” she asks.

I hold back a smirk at her suspicious tone. “Since arriving in Abbottsville I have been inundated with social invitations. Many I can’t refuse as I wish to build goodwill in the community. I need someone to accompany me who has no interest in romantic entanglements.”

“And you think that person is me?”

“It makes a certain amount of sense.” No, it doesn’t, and I’m a fool for even suggesting it. But ever since admitting to myself that I find her even the tiniest bit attractive, I’ve become obsessed with seeing more of her.

“And that’s it?” She poses the question with particular emphasis.

“You can’t tell anyone about our bargain.” I hope the entire town, her father included, will suspect we’re lovers. This should make Powell crazy and disrupt the affair Rebecca is having with her married lover. Win-win. “The rest we’ll make up as we go.”

When Gray hears about it, he will laugh and laugh. Then he’ll tell me what a crazy stupid idea this is. And maybe he’ll be right. But the fact is, my revenge against Raymond Powell is at an impasse.

The man believes himself untouchable, and for the most part, he is. His daughter, however, is very touchable and well within my reach. Wondering what I’m doing to her will drive Powell mad.

“I’d rather have everything spelled out,” she says.

I’m fighting a smirk as I ask, “What are you afraid of?”

“You can’t seriously expect me to just blunder blind into an arrangement with you.”

“Very well. I will be living in Abbottsville for the next six months or so.” My gaze slides over her. There isn’t much to catch anyone’s attention. Ordinary clothes. No make-up. At least today she’s left her glasses behind. When I accused her of hiding, I wasn’t off the mark. “During that time, I will want female companionship.”

“You mean like…” She seemed unable to finish the sentence. “Like…”

“Like?” I prompt, curious to what path her mind travels to.

“You…you can’t really expect me to…” The silence stretches. She looks mortified. “To sleep with you.”

Outrageous. Tempting. Risky. My mouth goes dry.

Expect? No. At least not as part of my vendetta against her father. But for my own pleasure? With ruthless determination, I refocus on my primary motivation. I intend to torment her father with rumors and insinuation. But now that she’s brought up the idea of us sleeping together, I’m not sure I can keep from dwelling on the idea.

“I’d be a better choice for you than Tickwell.” Her eyes grow very big as I set my hand on the railing beside her and lean in. “At least I’m not married.”

“This isn’t like you,” she says.

Irritation flares at her presumption. “You don’t know anything about me.”

“I know how you used to be.”

“You knew an inexperienced boy.”

Detecting her spicy perfume, I lower my head to better absorb the scent. The exotic blend seems at odds with the angel brightness of her hair and her nondescript appearance. What would it be like to have that scent rubbed all over my skin by her naked body pressed against mine?

“I can’t believe you expect me to sleep with you.” She stares at me for a long, searching moment before speaking. “Do you seriously think you’d be satisfied with an unwilling woman in your bed?” Her whispered question blends curiosity and challenge.

“Do you seriously think you’d be unwilling?” The subtle jump of her body when I blow air against her neck betrays her. “Go ahead and tell me you don’t want my hands on you.”

“I don’t.”

“You may claim that the idea gives you no pleasure, but your body…” I coast my hand down her ribcage and her back arches, pressing her into my touch. Fire flares in my gut, dangerous and wild. “Tells a different story.”

Her features flow from confusion into sensual bemusement. How does she pull off the naïve act so convincingly? Regardless of what she pretends, she’s no match for me. With a look, a word or, heaven help me, a touch, I arouse her. A ferocious sense of power seizes me. My heart thunders in my chest, pumping blood to my groin. Fuck. What is her allure?

“But you don’t have to worry,” I continue. “I like my women eager or not at all.”

“Really?” Her lashes drift upward. “You seem like the sort of man who takes what he wants.”

book blurb

A good man falls seven times,
But I’m far from a good man.

I’ve got my own set of rules,
And I never stray from them.
I live by a simple set of guidelines and they’re easy to follow.

But when Chelsea Robinson walked into my garage,
The rules went out the door.
Suddenly, I was falling.
No, that’s not right.
It was more like a crash-landing,
Because I sure as hell couldn’t stop myself.
And now, I’m still falling,
Uncontrollably.
For a woman I shouldn’t even want.
But when love steps in, you have no option but to break your own rules.

excerpt

“Knock knock.”

“Who’s there?”

“Anita,” Chelsea says, looking like the Cheshire Cat.

Her low, satin-like voice is doing all kinds of things to my cock. I barely respond with, “Anita who?”Maybe I can cool down with a sip of water. My hand finds one of the bottled waters I’d pulled out from the refrigerator earlier.

“Anita dick inside me!” she says, cracking up.

Water comes flying from between my lips. Chelsea is beside me, cackling, and I’m choking. Did she just say she needs a dick inside her? I can’t catch my breath. I think about my next move. How much can I say?Fuck it. Might as well be upfront. Once I collect myself and put the bottle down, I catch and hold Chelsea’s gaze. “How about mine?”

“What?” she whispers, leaning away from me in a hurry.

I move closer to her as I’ve longed to do since we sat down. I have to touch her, and I settle on fingering a few of her long curls, twirling them around. I’m trying to collect myself and not come off as a desperate fool. I take in a few deep breaths to help me regain some of my composure. “I know where I’d like this to end, Chelsea.”

Her tongue slips through her lips and moistens them. I move closer to her, breathing her in, and I do believe I could actually come right now. Mutual desire saturates the air as our eyes connect and our bodies lean in at the same time. Unable to decide where to touch again, my hands drop to her thighs, where her skirt is hiked up.

Counting helps to calm me down. “I’ve been dying to see what’s under this thing since I saw you at the garage.” My hand slides up from her bare flesh to the edge of her skirt.

She hesitates, even though her mouth opens.

“Come on; you can tell me,” I prompt.

“I’ve wanted to see more of this for the last two weeks.” Her hand travels up my arm then grips it.

That’s all I needed to hear. I drag her over my lap so she’s straddling me. Her skirt rides up even more. All of her is exposed: gorgeous thighs and her more-than-handfuls ass cheeks. My hands get greedy, palming the body part—one of many—that has driven me wild since seeing her in those denim cut-offs. My finger trails down the thin strip of material that’s between her ass.

“Mmm,” she hums.

“Chels, you have to tell me to stop.” I give her an out, just in case she needs one. But she rubs her barely-covered pussy on me, and I take that as her answer.

“I don’t want you to stop.”
