Behind the Title

(Creation of a Love Story)

By Romance Author Cynthia Roberts

Author PhotoCreating romantic fiction has been a passion of mine, ever since I was old enough to understand the connection between the sexes.  I think I was twelve, when I wrote my first love story and like most young minds; I truly thought it was a masterpiece.

There’s another masterful connection that has been going on now for centuries, and that, is the one between music and literature.  There is a full alphabet of songs that have been written retelling a work of literature as far back as the 18th century.

“If I Die Young” by The Band Perry was based on a poem, Lady of Shallot.  “Love Story” by Taylor Swift is loosely based on Romeo & Juliet.  The artist Sting’s “Moon Over Bourbon Street” was based on an Anne Rice Novel, Interview With A Vampire.

More interesting though, the anatomy of a song has also within its lyrics a pretty fascinating back story as well.  For more than five decades, authors have been creating fictional pieces and bringing readers deep inside the lyrics.  I grew up listening to my mom’s collection of romantic ballads from the 40s, 50s, and 60s.  Those lyrics have forever been embossed into my brain, I still sing along whenever I hear them.  Lyrics like those back then told a story, and they were so strong, and emotional, their affect were everlasting.

I have a library of love songs on iTunes I listen to religiously, while I write, as a source of inspiration and a tool that gets me in the mood and mindset I need to be in.  It is from this list, I began to formulate a series of ideas, followed by cryptic notes on paper, and finally the creation of my Love Song Standards Series.  I made a list of the songs I connected with personally, whittling it down to thirty-five.  That number was quite overwhelming and I thought virtually impossible to create that many scenarios.  So, I chipped away at the songs and their lyrics, until I decided on a top ten.

I had made a commitment to myself to finish one book a month throughout 2016, writing a chapter every day, leaving me ample time to polish and edit each one.  I knew from the on-start, what I wanted my covers to look like.  They had to resemble each other in a way that would tie them together, but strong enough for them to stand on their own.  My designer Covers by Ramona did an exceptional job tying all my ideas together.

After Book 6, Chances Are, was completed, my brain was fried.  I took a short reprieve and switched it up a bit with a Romantic Suspense, A Pawn for Malice.  Happily, the first two books of my series received a 5-Star Readers Favorite Award, which ended my promotion efforts.  I was forced to take an extended break due to personal issues that had set me back both physically and emotionally.  My focus now is to both promote my series and finish the final four titles All The Way, It’s Impossible, Sincerely, and Unforgettable.

If you’re a lover of contemporary romance, please do check out my Love Song Standards Series.  I know you’ll be pleasantly pleased.  Buy links and descriptions are available on my website at RomanceAuthorCynthiaRoberts.com.  If you subscribe to my mailing list, we can stay in touch as to when the other titles are completed PLUS you’ll receive a complimentary copy of Book 1, Unchained Melody.  All that I ask is for you to please, please share an honest review at the online retailer you use most. It will help me dramatically towards promoting my book and the series.

Book Excerpt

Having stocked up on groceries and other essential items, I began the trip to my new home a few miles outside town. I hadn’t gone far when I realized by the thudding and the way the SUV was handling that I had a flat tire. Brand-new vehicle. Great.

I pulled off to the side of the road and got out to assess the damage. The tire was most definitely flat—probably from a nail near the house. I would need to speak with the contractor about cleaning up the area directly around the house and remember not to park too close to the site. Lucky for me, I’d stowed the shopping bags in the backseat. Getting the spare tire out of the wheel well should be a cinch. I turned on the hazard lights and popped the back hatch.

A few minutes later, I had the jack in place and was struggling to loosen the tire bolts. They were on tight, as they should be, but it made it harder for an average woman to change the tire. There had to be an easier way. This was too much like work.

I was standing up after having taken off the last bolt when a white SUV pulled in behind me with a man inside. Help was here. He walked up, and the first thing I noticed was his dark eyes. They were the most beautiful shade of brown I’d ever seen on a man. Scorching. Then he put on a pair of sunglasses. Still, he was handsome, with his matching dark brown, shoulder-length hair, peppered with gray. He was tall and lanky and appeared quite buff. Judging by the tan he was sporting, he might work outdoors.

“Need some help?” he asked in a gravelly voice.

“Yes, please.” I nodded, not knowing if I could speak coherently if he asked me anything more. My heart was in my throat, and gooseflesh covered me. How could I be so instantly attracted to someone?

“I see you’ve done the hard part. I’ll pull this tire off and get you back on the road in a few minutes.”

I nodded again.

I watched him as he pulled off the flat and looked it over before grabbing the spare from the back. He had to be at least six foot three, and he even walked sexy.

“Looks like you ran over a nail. Need to stay out of construction sites.”

He bent over and picked up one of the lug nuts. The view of his tight ass in those formfitting jeans was heaven. I wondered if he was married. I hadn’t noticed a wedding ring. Hell, that didn’t mean a thing these days.

A few minutes later, he was finished and everything was stowed back in my vehicle.

He straightened and dusted off his hands before he held one out to me. “I’m Linc, by the way. If you need someone to fix your flat, go see Curtis. Tell him I sent you, and he’ll make sure to get it repaired quickly.”

“Thank you, Linc. I’m Audrey,” I replied, shaking his hand and hoping I wouldn’t tie my tongue in knots. “What do I owe you?”

“Not a thing.” He grinned. Perfect smile. Perfect man. “You have a nice rest of your day, and remember what I said. Stay away from those construction sites.”

“I’ll try. Thank you again.”

“My pleasure, Audrey.”

I watched that fine ass as he walked back to his SUV. Damn, I certainly hoped he lived nearby. If he was any indication of what the men looked like around here, I didn’t see myself leaving any time soon.

51n3uhih-kl-_sy346_

Blurb:

Lacy Dawn’s father relives the Gulf War, her mother’s teeth are rotting out, and her best friend is murdered by the meanest daddy on Earth. Life in the hollow is hard. She has one advantage — an android was inserted into her life and is working with her to cure her parents. But, he wants something in exchange. It’s up to her to save the Universe. Lacy Dawn doesn’t mind saving the universe, but her family and friends come first.

Rarity from the Hollow is adult literary science fiction filled with tragedy, comedy and satire.

“The most enjoyable science fiction novel I have read in years.”
—Temple Emmet Williams, Author, former editor for Reader’s Digest

“Quirky, profane, disturbing… In the space between a few lines we go from hardscrabble realism to pure sci-fi/fantasy. It’s quite a trip.”
— Evelyn Somers, The Missouri Review

. “…a hillbilly version of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy…what I would have thought impossible; taken serious subjects like poverty, ignorance, abuse…tongue-in-cheek humor without trivializing them…profound…a funny book that most sci-fi fans will thoroughly enjoy.” — Awesome Indies (Gold Medal)

“…sneaks up you and, before you know it, you are either laughing like crazy or crying in despair, but the one thing you won’t be is unmoved…a brilliant writer.” –Readers’ Favorite (Gold Medal)

“Rarity from the Hollow is an original and interesting story of a backwoods girl who saves the Universe in her fashion. Not for the prudish.” —Piers Anthony, New York Times bestselling author

“…Good satire is hard to find and science fiction satire is even harder to find.” — The Baryon Review

Political Allegory: You may be interested in this press release:  The original © was 2006. You would have to read the novel to find out how Lacy Dawn, the protagonist, convinced Mr. Rump (Bernie Sanders) to help talk Mr. Prump (Donald Trump) into saving the universe. The political allegory includes pressing issues that America is fighting about today, including illegal immigration and the refuge crisis, extreme capitalism / consumerism…. Mr. Prump was a projection of Donald Trump based on the TV show, The Apprentice. Part of the negotiations in the story occur in the only high rise on planet Shptiludrp (Shop Until You Drop), a giant shopping mall and the center of economic governance, now more easily identifiable as Trump Tower. There is no political advocacy in the story, other than sensitizing readers to the huge social problem of child maltreatment, but the allegory is much more obvious now that Donald Trump is a household name. A similar press release can be read here.

On January 20, 2016, Rarity from the Hollow was awarded a second Gold Medal by a popular book review site: https://readersfavorite.com/book-review/rarity-from-the-hollow. Additional praise of the first edition has been posted by book bloggers on Amazon.

About the Author:

I recently retired after 52 years of contributions into the U.S. Social Security fund so that I could write and promote my fiction. I’m a former mental health psychotherapist in West Virginia. But, after coming home drained from working with child abuse victims, I didn’t have the energy left to begin its self-promotion. Author proceeds have been donated to a child abuse prevention program in my home state. http://www.childhswv.org/

UPLIFT by Natalia Terfa Book Spotlight

uplift

No matter how old we are, where we live, or what we believe – there are times in everyone’s life that cause us to struggle. An it’s in those times that we want nothing else but a word of hope and instead are so often surrounded by trite platitudes and false promises.

This is not that.

This small book was written to be something different: to uplift those who need it, to bring grace and love and light to the darkest times, and to be a voice of hope in the world where hope is often at a premium.

Read it yourself and be uplifted, or gift it to someone going through dark days.

We all need a little hope in difficult times. This is just a place to start.

GUEST POST

Most people who read my book or sign up for my email list (www.upliftlife.org) are going through something… maybe they are dealing with a new diagnosis, or they have just lost a loved one, or they are struggling with depression and anxiety. And often, it is the people around them that connect them to me. They are wanting to help, don’t know what to say or do, and so my book is an easy way to help. But because people are lovely – most want to know what else they can do and how they respond when loved ones are not doing so well. Since this is by far my most frequently asked question – I came up with this handy-dandy list of 5 Ways to Be an Uplifter

  1. Be with.
Did you know that the word compassion comes from the latin words “com” and “pasus” which translate to “with” and “suffer”. So compassion literally means to suffer with. That means we sit and cry, we hug, we pray (see #3), and get right down in the crap that is happening – whatever it is – and be with them in it.
  2. Stop talking.
We like to help. People who are uplifters are people with good intentions, maybe even the best intentions, but those intentions can come out as advice and fixing when sometimes all someone needs is you to sit down and say nothing. Trust that being there is enough. And if you HAVE to talk, say “yes, this sucks, I’m sorry, but I’m here.”
  3. Listen.
Really. I know it seems like the same thing as not talking, but it’s completely different. It takes time. Intentional time. When you ask someone “how are you?” – mean it. Stay longer to hear more than the typical “I’m fine” or “good” that we tend to respond with. Start asking, “How are you, really?” And then listen.
  4. Pray.
Really. Don’t just say “I’ll pray for you” but actually pray for them. At the very moment you are with them pray. When you’re on the phone or texting instead of saying “I’m praying” text or type an actual prayer.
  5. Little things.
See a meme that makes you think of someone? Share it! Walking around and someone pops into your mind? Let them know! Send a text or email. Those little things can mean a lot, and often happen when they are needed most. Don’t miss out on a chance to be the uplifter someone needs.
